Each year the River Nile used to flood, completely changing the scenery around the Nile. This area was known as the Black Land. Slightly further out is another area which was called the Red Land. This was a region of desert beyond the reach of the flooding.
The River Nile no longer floods, thanks to the Construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s.
The highest threat to flooding on the River Nile is in the months of August, September and October when the river is most bloated. There has, however, not been a flood attributed to the River Nile since 1969/70.
